The 1st image looks like a Lesser Redpoll, and 2nd maybe a juvenile or female, she does look young so i would guess a 1st winter.......You might also get Mealy Redpolls as well as you say they differ hugely in appearance, and as Brian says, very difficult to tell the difference, although Mealys, the back of their neck is much lighter/whiter .
