I can't see how a 28-300 could retain sharpness across the range tbh

Its acceptable, when you are not in control of the subject you have to do your best, no time to change lens and the dog goes from standing up to 15 meters away and runs toward you, you need shots at the stand and of the movement with the dog filling as much of the screen as pos. in both cases.

BTW do take shots of other things like bits of buildings and plants so I like a choice of lens.

Oh want primes as well If I can get away with it one zoom, one fast prime about 50mm and a macro not sure which but either 35/40 or may be 70 or even 105. Lots of thinking to do.

Not sure... but would a teleconvertor work on the 18-200 ? that could be ideal for you?

I'm not sure either Azz, it is hard to believe I have owned and used cameras for so many years and never found out much about how they work - would I be able to use AF with a teleconvertor, 'cause the dogs seem to move at one hell of a lick these days and I would have a job keeping them in focus and adjust the lens length at the same time with these my ancient fingers.

Thanks Azz, Sigma do one too, a 28-300 macro I already have it with a Pentax mount and find it performs well, have to watch it at the 300 end but that is more to do with me and the way I set the camera and is the same with the 100 - 300 Pentax you need a good tripod (well I do) and a quickish shutter speed or else you use a remote release.

Will try to contain myself until the D90 has been out for a few weeks to read the reviews, which I will then ignore and award myself a Christmas present.

It does sound like a super little camera - if I hadn't of got my D300 I would have got the D90 I reckon. because of the video feature
