Remember the 'height' is height above sea level rather than height of the mountain.
Timberline Lodge Hotel is at 5,850 feet.
Mt Hood Elevation: 11,237 feet
Total elevation gain: 5,387 feet over 3.2 miles
Similar to Nevis from Sea Level

Ben Nevis has a height of 4,409 ft.
That's the highest point on the British Isles.
The U.S. has over 80 peaks that climb higher than 14,000 ft, the highest of which is Mt McKinley at 20,320ft. That's almost 5 times higher than Ben Nevis.
I understand the whole " above sea level " as opposed to " elevation gain from the surrounding landscape " thing, but my point still stands I think. We don't have anything half as big as some of the whoppers Bob has over there.
I'm as proud of our wee landscape as the next man, but I wouldn't compare it to the mountains in the US. They'd be nothing more than foothills to some of those mountain ranges.

Portland is many things to many people Phil. It has more people commuting on bicycle to work than I've ever seen in the United States, including an annual all nude race through downtown Portland. Portland has a huge return to electric trolley cars, trains and soon, cars. Portlanders love beer & coffee. It's a special place to live. LOL

It was in a National Geographic magazine. It was all about the miles of bike lanes and how they even have their own signals etc etc. It showed some great pictures of all the green painted 'bike box' road sections.

The bike boxes are a recent development. There are tandom bicycles, gas powered bicycles, reclining bicycles and lots of bicyclists towing trailers with saddlebags attached. biking is a way of life here for many. I have a bicyle that hasn't been ridden two miles since purchasing it two years ago. It sits on my balcony with two flat tires.
