No offence taken and all opinions welcome.

That said, a good deal of portraiture is black and white and a good deal of wedding photojournalism also. I personally see eye contact and subject expression as more important than skin tone (and it can cover some skin tones that look less that great, step forward Northern Europeans). With weddings I'm often concerned with how a background may look (not something I can usually control). That may well inform whether a conversion is done. I'd say that around 40-50% of a wedding will be colour but I make no apologies for being a big fan of mono. Mono has a timeless feel to it IMO.

I take my inspiration from the likes of Jeff Ascough and Marcus Bell for weddings, and James Nachtwey, Tom Stoddart and Sebastião Salgado for photojournalism, so it's perhaps no surprise that I like mono.

Re: Mono portraits - D3 and 85/1.4

That is where we differ then, not having studied photography or any great photographers and being a complete novice, I try and create my own thoughts and ideas into a photo. I have to take my hat off to you Radiohead in doing wedding photos, something I would be sh*t scare of incase something went wrong.

Maybe I should study other great photographers but at the moment running my own business (7 day week for me) I have very little time to spare on photography.

Keep those pictures comming, we and me in particular, can always learn from other peoples work.

Thanks Bazza. There are few rights and wrongs so go with what's right for you. I can't shoot landscapes to save my life and they stress me out far more than weddings!

Re: Mono portraits - D3 and 85/1.4

I'm with Radiohead on this one - I think B&W (when done right as per the shots in this thread) can actually add to a photo. You certainly get more of a nostalgic feel from them.

However, please feel free to start a thread discussing B&W versus colour if you like Bazza Not sure someone's picture thread is the best place for a general debate on the topic

Re: Mono portraits - D3 and 85/1.4

Avoiding the mono v colour debate.....

These are sharp as a tack, but the dof for me is too narrow. The faces look detached from the rest of the head somehow no doubt due to shooting them wide open. This is the most pronounced in the last one. Just my opinion, feel free to ignore me
