Re: Red Kite

Well done for catching it mark. A billions times better than my wifes effort with the point and shoot on the way back from Oxford.

Re: Red Kite

Thanks Owen & Dave........

Not the easiest birds to capture Owen especially as it was so sunny but so windy also today, he did probably 3 circuits of the area, coming in from the east and lost sight of him once he went far west, then around 10 minutes later he was back east until he was gone for good.
I have had so many attempts Dave on getting a good capture of the Kites over the last few months, this is my best by far, although it did help with him being lower than usual. Anything flying is usually difficult to capture using point and shoot cameras, you end up zooming so far its very hard to keep image still on the screen, especially if your using the camera handheld.

Re: Red Kite

Good Catch.

I saw one the other day (not as common as you think up here) but didn't have the camera.

There's a place called Argaty farm (about 20mins drive from me) which I keep meaning to go to but haven't got around to it yet.

http://argatyredkites.co.uk/photography-corner/

It's on my 'to do' list however It's always nice to catch one out of the blue rather than visit somewhere that you know they will be.

Re: Red Kite

Thanks Phil

I agree with you regarding seeing any bird that you have never seen or very rarely see out of the blue, the thrill for starters, it can be quite something . I suppose when it comes to Argaty Farm, the owners have given everybody the opportunity to capture them in their natural habitat (Im guessing none of them are captive) which is the 2nd best thing. Make sure you tick it off your list one day Phil, especially as the place is so close to you......Other than the 2 that fly around locally to me, if i wanted to see them in numbers i would have to travel along the M40 corridor just past High Wycombe, about 35miles from where i live

Re: Red Kite

Supposed to be quite a few over in Ireland now Laura, mainly N Ireland and up around County Down......There have been some down in Cork and surrounding areas, sadly, one of the stories that i came across whilst looking through web pages is that back in 2009, Red Kites and Buzzards had been found poisoned is West Waterford and also County Donegal. Why people would want to harm these beautiful birds is beyond me
Hopefully over the next few years their numbers will continue to increase and they become a common sight in our skies once again
