Re: D700? What do you reckon...

Oops, sorry Jols, no. I have enough now to have an immediate D700 kit 9e.g. 12-24, 24-70, 50, 35, 70-300), but I would have several lenses that are DX format and would be surplus e.g. 10-20, 55-200, 18-70, 18-50.
Kit 1
Nikon D700
Nikon 28-70 f2.8 ED AF-S (The Beast)
Nikon 80-200mm f2.8
Tamron 24-135 SP
Nikon 300mm f4
Nikon 70-300mm VR
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 (DX)
Nikon 28-105mm (great walkaround on D700!)
Lensbaby Composer
Nikon 20-35mm f2.8
Nikon SB800
Kit 2
Nikon D300
Nikon 20mm f2.8
Nikon 24mm f2.8

Re: D700? What do you reckon...

FF is great.........BUT, you will need to invest in more powerful lens to get close to the action as you will lose the 1.5x crop from the D300.

I was recently seriously looking at the 700 as I can get a preferential discount via the MOD - I've used the D300, D700 and D3 - the D3x is awesome but the costs is inhibitive. The difference between the 300 and 700 isn't that marked for general photography if you put aside the FF capacity. I'd be inclined to wait until the 700x is out, as I decided to do. However - the price of the 700 replacement is also likely to be another consideration - albeit it will push down 700 prices.

Swings and roundabouts BC.

Re: D700? What do you reckon...

I have given this a lot of thought recently. Not sure I can justify almost £1k extra right now for the advantages of full frame but at the expense of some of the advantages offered by DX. Many people seem to have both formats and I can understand why.

I really enjoy the street pics, and DX seems well suited to what I do. I like to have that harder edged image, and DX seems to do that better than FX. I generally photograph men, and the creamy, softer edge of FX may be lost. I don't know, all up in the air right now, but not clear enough to justify the money at the mo...or at least that's the thinking today!

Re: D700? What do you reckon...

I dunno BC - there's just so much more clarity in FX, esp (imo) for portraits which you do a lot of

Can you hire one for a day or two to see how you get on with it?

Re: D700? What do you reckon...

I think hiring one is a great idea if you get the chance. Or perhaps see if you can find someone who has one to spend a day with trying theirs out? Perhaps a local camera club could be of help?

Re: D700? What do you reckon...

Can't really see the point of going D700 if you already have a D300. You can get the same picture width by choice of lens you use. If you had a lower speck Nikon then yes possibly but to my mind the D700 doesn't do much more than the D300 it the lens used that counts, or maybe I am missing something.
