Honestly take your time choosing,it is confusing, but I would say set your price limit and stick to it Otherwise your list keeps growing

Re: New DSLR Ideas Please!

If your looking at an entry level Nikon, i personally feel the D60 is the way to go. It is an easy camera to use with a very simple to navigate interface. The noise levels at a higher ISO are controled very nicley compared to the 40 range and pictures are of a good quality. The downside to this camera is the same as that in the 40 range - the AF system. Your looking at a smaller range of lenses that will auto zoom on your camera. This can be a pain in the bum if your looking at shoting faster subjects as you will need to manually focus. However if you asre shooting still life or subjects, then lack of AF shouldnt hinder to you.

Canon ranges are also definatly worth looking into, so please dont feel you need to be pushed or pigeon holed into the Nikon or Canon camp. The Canon EOS400D is a very popular DSLR. This does have an AF system compatible with all Canon lenses and the build quality is very compact and sturdy. On the down side, the camera can suffer from Chroma Noise, but this can go reletivly un-noticed by new comers as can the lower saturation of colours (compared to the Nikon range)

Get out and have a play with some cameras. Buying a camera is like going out and buying a car. Nobody can give you a solid right or wrong answer as cameras are very much about the individual buying them.

So ask to try out both even though at the moment you may just want an all round lens, its worth knowing in advance only an unbalanced rig can cause more camera shake than you would like.

That's something to consider for the future also.. What sort of things do the longer lenses do (sorry)? I have quite small hands so a smaller camera might be good in that sense. Will ask to try it wit a variety of lenses (and I guess they'll probably let me if it looks like I'm going to buy them!).

Re: New DSLR Ideas Please!

Hi Charlotte,

I have the Nikon D40, and for action shots it takes about 2 1/2 pics a second, and I've got some quite nice ones of Jack with it doing agility, the lens I use at the moment is 55-200mm, but, and I may be wrong, if you have larger lenses they are heavier and you'd need a tripod, which isn't ideal when you are trying to capture a speeding dog

Wow, this is all so useful! I do really want to be able to shoot moving objects, especially hawks/birds so this problem with the Nikon 40 and 60 ranges could be significant. So just to ask about the problem you mention with the EOS400D, is it like colour distortion? Like where something takes on unnatural colours? I really think I'd find something like that very irritating. I think I know someone with this camera, so will see if I can have a go!

Its not a problem, no. You will be more than happy woth what Canon produces! It just means that the colours arnt quite as vibrant as what Nikon gets. Its a small difference, one of which, that unless you put a Nikon and Canon shot side by side, you wont notice it.

I really love your Jack shots. Do you ever have the problems with the AF that Kanikula mentions, or do you use one of the lenses that auto-zooms onto your camera? Sorry for the hundreds of questions..!

Oh good - I just thought it was something more sinister!! Will definitely be considering the Canon range.

Re: New DSLR Ideas Please!

All the new AF-S lenses auto focus on the D60/D40 range

It's only really the older lenses that don't - i'e those that were designed for traditional SLR cameras.

You will probably also find that if you buy 'new' gear, you will more than likely go for AF-S lenses anyway, because the newer lenses, esp the DSLR format (DX) have had their optics optimised and designed for use with digital slrs anyway - so they will give you the best quality.

The only lens I wanted when I had just the d40 was the nifty fifty (50mm), but Nikon now have a really really nice 'new' (so will auto focus with d40/60s) 60mm that is also a macro lens. It is more expensive but the quality is fantastic.

Also even owning a D300 that works with olders lens, I would be more inclined to get 'newer' digital optimised lenses as they will give me the best quality on my camera as they have been designed with it in mind.
