Short answer is Yes

Longer answer is the data is embeded within the photo automatically, this is what is used for recovery of lost/ deleted photos via recovery programs is my guess.

Re: reading other peoples data

from http://www.photographymad.com/pages/...data-explained

"EXIF stands for "exchangeable image file format", which doesn't really give you any clues as to what it actually is, but in a nutshell it allows you to store certain information within your photos. This information is known as "metadata" and can include things like the date and time the shot was taken, camera settings like shutter speed and focal length, and copyright information."

It can be used by programs like Lightroom for searching images and filtering. I regularly interrogate Lightroom to find images that match certain criteria.

For example I may ask Lightroom to display all images taken in 2011, in portrait mode using Canon 5D MkII with 24-105mm lens at ISO 200. It will then look at the Metadata (Exif data) and display all images that match this

So in the example above that equals 273 images.

This and operations similar to this in other programs was the prime reason for Exif data.

It will not help recover lost or deleted images because it is part of the image file and as such would be deleted.

Hope this helps a little

Re: reading other peoples data

After downloading and putting onto your computer you should see this if you right click over the original photo. Line 4 is Open with Kuso Exif viewer.

Re: reading other peoples data

I don't remove my data and also, there's an addon for Firefox that allows you to view Exif quite easily. I find I use it a lot!
