Very much so, Imagine the specs that they would have to use for a 1DMk1V! omg it hardly seems imaginable.

I read an article about the high Mpixels being achieved now, and Canon have said they are having to design new lenses from the ground up as the MPixels are at the limit of the glass (could be marketing speak of course). So expect to see a flurry of new lenses next year with the new bodies.

As for the 5D, a few people have pinned their tail on the preverbial donkey and gone for an announcement on the 8th Sept.

Re: Canon 5D replacement

New lenses? Hmmmm not sure that will go down well - I bet lots of people have spent thousands on top end glass, they won't be happy if they're now redundant for new cameras

Re: Canon 5D replacement

The lenses we have now will not be redundant, they will still work.

But I guess (if Canon are right) all manufacturers are going to have this issue about lenses.

Personally, if it was an issue, and I had to drop down from 50Mpix to 25Mpix, would I seriously worry?

Especially as 6Mpixels is plenty enough for great images (probably less realistically)

This is why I am not too worried over the Mpix count of the 5D replacement, DSLRs already have big enough sensors!

Thank you.
You mentioned the "idiotic useless live view" (a rather sweeping statement)
which most modern DSLR's have, including the 40d, which the 5DMKII will have, and if rumours are to be believed, will have a video mode like the Nikon d90 as well, and loads of other features that you will no doubt find idiotic and useless.

I've proved to you that it's not as useless as you seem to think, so, don't knock it till you have tried it!

Just because you don't have it, or have not used it, does not mean it's useless.

BTW you say you are not interested in features on the upcoming 5d MKII, so why don't you just buy the 5d which lacks features but has superb image quality, and does not have live view? Better still, I think an old film camera would be better suited to you

Re: Canon 5D replacement

Read this tonight.

How about a 7D at 18MP - sounds ok, but for the dual Digic 3 in the 'specs' ... should we not expect Digic IV in everything new?

On a firmer footing, I've heard (thanks) of someone who is awaiting an insurance replacement of their 5D - their dealer says a new version is out probably within a couple of weeks, and definitely by the end of month. They don't stock the 5D anymore and got the update info from Canon Canada

September 18th is getting widely quoted as the next 'release date' for the follow up to the 5D

Here are the alleged specs for the alleged 7D (sorry, they came from a German site)

Spezifikationen EOS 7D (gerüchteweise)
Sensor 24x36 Kleinbildvollformat
Auflösung 18 Megapixel
Prozessor Dual DIGIC III
Monitor 3" VGA LCD; 920.000 dots
Sucher 100%; 0,76x
Autofokus 19-Punkt-AF
ISO 100-6400 (erweitert: 50-12800)
Serienaufnahmen 5 B/s
Sonstiges Staubschutzsystem (Dust protection system)

If we do get a 3D/5D/7D split, I will probably wait for the one closest to the 1. I really want the lens microadjustment and the higest ISO the body will do.

Lol, that rubber keyboard still makes me laugh, how many hours did I spend in front of one of those, typing in the free programs printed in the mags

But yes, the news and anticipation is half the fun, but it is also frustrating. I have been waiting since last December for the upgrade to come out, so 9 months of waiting is a lot, can put years on a man

Lets wait and see if the first day of the 8th (this coming Monday) brings anything, if no, on to the 18th lol.

If it is not announced at Photokina though, omg?!?!?!? I might have to go in to hibernation.

Re: Canon 5D replacement

So the 10th September and the 23rd of September have been thrown in to the '5D Replacement announcement day' pot.

So thats the 8th, 10th, 23rd and 28th. Some hedge betting there I would say

I would say the 23rd or 28th, with the 23rd being most likely as they are the first and last days of Photokina.

I can't see Canon going to a major show and waiting until the last day to make an announcement though? Having said that, I can't see why they released the 50D before the show, unless they didn't want to spoil the 50D party with the release of a higher model.

Apparently, the 50D is not a 40D 'replacement' it is a 'sister model' Canon splitting its models even further, they really do want to cover every user/budget don't they

23rd then (now I have picked the 23rd you can almost guarantee that is the day it won't come out lol)
