Monopods and Monopod Heads

Decided that I'm going to get myself a monopod.

I swear by my tripod for landscapes but feel a monopod will be a great thing when I'm on the move esp now I'll be using a long lens for animals and wildlife.

To those folk that use them - what type of heads do you use on your monopods ?

Re: Monopods and Monopod Heads

I have no special head on my monopod The nice thing about a monopd is how eay it is to change angle etc just by tilting in various directions. I would like mine to be easier to flip from portrait to landscape though.

Re: Monopods and Monopod Heads

I dont use a head, as LM says they are very easy to use. I find it very easy to loosen and swing the camera from landscape to portrait using the collar on the lens, and the grip for ease of use doing portraits.
Kit 1
Canon EOS 7D
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Canon 100-400mm L IS USM.
Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 macro
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG MACRO HSM II.
Giottos Pro Monopod. MML 3270B.
Canon BG-E7 grip.

I can cope with tilting the monopod forwards or backwards for the angles I'll need but flipping the camera from portrait to landscape is something I'd like.

Re: Monopods and Monopod Heads

That's the one I'm thinking of Moon.

When I was down to one arm - I couldn't use my camera without a tripod and my three way head was a nightmare so I aquired a manfrotto 322RC2 ball head grip which was a big help.

http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-322R.../dp/B000184N22

I'd toyed with the idea of sticking the 322RC2 on a monopod but it seems that's a bit overkill.

The 234RC you have takes the same quick release plates I already have on my body and lenses so that would help. Can I ask - does it tilt forwards and backwards as well as flipping between portrait and landscape or do you lean forwards and backwards ?

Re: Monopods and Monopod Heads

It's a 90 degree tilt horizon to vertical, to go back and front tilt easily, I think you'd need a ball head. I love the one you have posted, I have been thinking of getting it for my Tripod, but TBH I don't really use it enough to warrant it, but it gets rave reviews. I think a smaller head would be better on a monopod.

I just started using a Manfrotto 680B this year for it's small size when traveling by motorcycle or scooter. I own a couple of good Manfrotto tripods and use them for landscape shots, time exposures & panoramic views. The monopod becomes extra versatile when combined with a Manfrotto 222 joystick head that allows quick release and spring loaded adjustment with a simple squeeze. I love it.

The joystick head, mounted with a Really Right Stuff quick release bracket, allow the change from landscape to portrait mode in about 5 seconds. I keep the Really Right Stuff L-Plate mounted to my D90 camera body so attachment is lightning fast and extremely sturdy. The joystick head also adds nearly a foot of height to the monopod that allows easier use of "Live View" on the D90.
