Fungus on lens

Does anyone have experience/advice on removing fairly heavy fungal growth from a lens element? I *think* it is a single lens, but coated...I don't think it is a glued element set. I would need to remove the 60mm lens ring to release it, but I have a plan for that. I don't know what damage the fungal bloom may have had on the lens though. It is, I would estimate, over a good 50% of the lens, but oddly doesn't seem to be degrading the actual image too much, although clearly (pun intended) it will be having some effect.

Anyone had/dealt with this kind of problem? I'm considering to start with leaving the lens pointing at the sun for a few days (of course there will be sun. It's only December...oh....) or finding a high intensity UV source from somewhere. Any other hints/suggestions gratefully received.

Re: Fungus on lens

Depending on how bad it is the sun may do the job.
If its not effecting your images then I would just leave it rather than take it to pieces and risk some damage due to trying to clean it.

It is fairly extensive, but in the daylight the resolving power of the lens is still quite good. Certainly for what I want. I will try it, if and when we get a visible moon, and see how it is on astrophotography. But I think you're right...give it sun, give it warmth and see how it goes.

I may do the same for myself. With added coffee...
