Getting Better? I hope

As some of you will know I have been struggling with trying to get a shot of a small bird with my Bigma (Sigma 50-500)

When I first got the lens the conditions were not really suitable but as it was new I tried and then began to worry there may be something wrong with it, although I was pretty sure it was operator trouble. However have listened to and taken advice and now I am getting there.

This may not be pin sharp but it is acceptable in focus and I managed it without the feeder in shot.

Comments and help welcome.

Re: Getting Better? I hope

By far your best picture EVER!!

This is a cracking picture and one I would be proud to have taken.

Super job snapper - very impressive capture and full of character too.

Re: Getting Better? I hope

I'm no expert having never really managed a decent bird shot but that looks pretty good to me !

Focus is spot on - the bird and the branch that it's on is pin sharp and the rest is thrown out nicely. The lighting works well too bringing out all the detail in the feathers.

Re: Getting Better? I hope

I am relieved to be honest I could not afford that particular lens but bought it anyway, the fact that having got it I was unable to get a decent shot was a worry. Did not know if it was the lens or the operator, I am very pleased it was the operator.

MANY THANKS for your comments, I am pleased to have this shot under my belt and will now be able to work with the lens knowing there is nothing wrong with it.

If anyone glanced at the exif they will see I was not even using the new camera so there should be more to come when I start with the K20 that at the moment is on duty with the other new lens my 105 macro - what a luck woman I am.

Re: Getting Better? I hope

Jackie, it's fantastic - this is not an easy lens to use, and you've gotthe hang of it now! You have the same problem as me though, I bet anything all your birds land in places like that where you have trouble with light because of all the leaves and branches, and that's if you can the bird at all, and then when you can it's not a great background! You've done remarkabley with it!

My next advice to you is set up a bird feeder somewhere where there's one or two branches, not too few or the birds won't bother, not too many or it makes your photography harder, and wait for them to come, when they do, they should land on those branches for you I'm no expert and it's not foolproof, but it's worked for me before, at established bird feeding sites. Sadly, my own garden has no such places

Brilliant though Jackie, took me ages to get any photos of sparrows, your little lad looks fabulous!
