Canon 50D v 5D

does anyone have an objective opinion, or experience, of a comparison between the two.

I am aware that the 5D is full frame, but it does have it's limitations, i.e, slow frame rate for action photography, no built-in dust cleaner, inability to use EF-S lenses, etc..

Whereas the 50D is a 'reduced' sensor camera, it has its advantages, i.e, fast frame rate ideal for action, built-in dust cleaner, 15.3 mps.

Canon intended the 50D to sit in the market between the 40D and the 5D - but reviews suggest that the 50D is producing better definition pictures than the 5D.

Given the prices are similar, I'd like further anecdotal research before I commit myself to either...

Any input would be useful thanks.

Re: Canon 50D v 5D

Remember the 50D is new and the 5D is an old model

Do you mean the 5D or the new 5D MkII ?

I mean the 5D - as much as I'd like one, I couldn't justify paying that much for a 5D Mk II, despite how good it is.

Re: Canon 50D v 5D

I am very interested in the 50D too, I want to upgrade early next year. But, can't make up my mind to either stay with Olympus and get the E3 or change to Canon now, before I buy any more Oly equipment.

I have been reading all the reviews for it, and it seems a cracking camera, and I have had a little play in Jessops, and it feels nice too. Also had a play with the Nikon D300 and D700 and I don't like the way they feel in my hand

Sorry Jack going off topic xxxx Just rambling out loud

Re: Canon 50D v 5D

If it's not the mkII I would personally go for the 50D. The 5d is now quite old, and by some of the pics of I have seen with very good (albeit expensive) lens the 50d is producing some excellent shots. Take a look a dejavus pics - they are quite something.

Landscape photographers might consider the 5D tho..

Re: Canon 50D v 5D

Thank you all - (and SteveL) I think you have all just confirmed what I was already thinking.

Looks like I could be selling a 400D in the very near future.

Re: Canon 50D v 5D

The 5d is full frame, I borrowed one from uni the other week, (I have a 30d, and the difference in quality between the 30d and the 50d is minimal by comparison,) and initially I thought I wasn't that impressed with the 5d - until I uploaded my pictures! There is a massive difference with having a full frame slr! I am not going to offer advice, but I'm looking into investing in a 5d, and I wasn't even thinking about changing my camera. Although I would probably say if you're going to change from a 400d to a 50d, perhaps you'd be better investing that money into some new glass?
