Finches

Went another run down to Lochwinnoch today to try capture some birdies
I was hoping for the Woodpecker to make another visit but no such luck, I was also hoping to get some tit shots and although a few appeared (great tit & bluetit) they were to quick. I'm still very happy with what I came away with and I'm really loving the combination of my 50d and 400mm more than ever

What shutter speed were you shooting at?

Thanks Laura. Yes, I think it's more to do with the quality jpg settings I use rather than the image dimensions.

Thanks MD.

1 and 2= 1/640sec, 3=1/800sec, 4= 1/640sec, 5=1/500sec, 6=1/640sec, 7=1/500sec, 8=1/640sec.

I normally try to keep the speed at 1/1000 for these small birds using my 400mm lens, but because of the poor light I wanted to keep the ISO down as well, so it was a bit of a balancing act. The ISO varied on these images from 320 to 1250 ISO.

Re: Finches

Very nice DJ & thanks for the speeds.

PS

I've found somebody local who is offering me the Canon 400mm f/5.6 L USM but I wondered about the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM.

This link.........

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/re...tten-400.shtml

........shows the 400 prime to be a lot sharper at 400mm but I would like the flexibility of the zoom.

Decisions decisions

Thanks Phil. Yes, most examples/reviews will show the prime to be sharper than the 400mm zoom but there is examples of the zoom matching the prime at 400mm, for IQ. Also, remember the 400 zoom has a push pull design which is known to be a dust collector/magnet. I think the zoom is a little heavier too.
