Oh what a camera {Nikon D700}

Last week I had to go to the medical photographic department at hospital, all very scary stuff, but don't worry i won't bore you with that,

The photographer was using a Nikon D700, ok so i wouldn't need the special lens he was using, but the camera, was lovely.
Soon as i showed an interest, he seemed quite happy to show off the camera,

I just had a look on the internet and they are about £1300 new and £800 + secondhand, are they worth it or am i being a very silly here , after looking at them i came on here and read SteveL's thread http://www.yophotographer.com/page.php?t=13358

I have asked myself the questions and really i can't answer them, but i stiil would like the Nikon D700 does anyone use one? and are they as good as they seem? are they worth it?

Re: Oh what a camera {Nikon D700}

The D700 is a great camera. Expect it to be replaced in the near future so the used market will improve.

It's been talked about in numerous threads in one of which I stated that if it were a Canon I would have bought one.

As with any full frame camera you can't skimp on lenses so you would need to be prepared to invest considerably more than the initial cost of the body.

The D700 is a stunning camera - and I reckon it's easy enough to let the photos speak for t

Check out the threads here http://www.yophotographer.com/tags.p...on+D700&page=5 that's page 5 so work your way backwards (4,3,2,1) - there are some awesome photos in those threads.

This thread is a good read too: http://www.yophotographer.com/page.php?t=6617

Re: Oh what a camera {Nikon D700}

It's the camera I want next, or rather it's replacement, just wish they'd hurry up about it.

As Phil said, because it's Full Frame you really need to buy decent glass, so bear that in mind, I've spent a lot on glass the last 12 months, before I even have the new camera, much more than the body costs, several times over probably.

If you have your heart set on it get it, just bear in mind the cost of lenses. Hope I didn't come across as negative x

Re: Oh what a camera {Nikon D700}

I have a D700, it's really good, but I wouldn't say it is massively better than a D300 if you do all your work in decent daylight, and full frame comes with some 'disadvantages' too. You also need to feed it very good lenses which are expensive and heavier thanIyou can get away with on crop format. It doesn't have the crop factor magnification so a 200mm f4 isn't a highly desirable 300mm f4 that it would effectivly be on crop, but it does have better tones, wider exposure latitude,less noise and a bigger viewfinder. You may be a bit out on your pricing...D700's generally sell around £1400-1600 new, and you are unlikely to pick a decent one up below around £1200 secondhand.

Re: Oh what a camera {Nikon D700}

As above - if you want similar but without the lens expense (or the ability in darker lighting conditions - and you definitely lose some of the creaminess) then the D300 is a good place to go I'm happy with mine - though for a few reasons I want full frame at some stage.

I have 2 D700's and love them. One point though, the D700 has no video, if that is something important to you then the D300 or D3oos.

Thanks Zoundz, I think when i do upgrade i want to change over to Nikon, and i think the D300 looks a bit more in my price bracket

Re: Oh what a camera {Nikon D700}

The D300 doesn't have video either - but the D300s does. I find I almost never use it, but occasionally it comes in handy I wouldn't have bought the camera for it, I wanted a D300, but the shop I bought it from were out of stock, so sent me a D300s instead for the price of the D300!
