Turnberry Lighthouse

Hi guys

I was sitting at my computer on Sunday afternoon, when I came across an image of the old Lighthouse, at the world famous Turnberry golf course in Ayrshire.
I suddenly had the urge to get down there and take a picture of it myself. It was about 3 O'clock, it was a beautiful clear day, and I had nothing better to do, so I quickly grabbed my camera gear, jumped in the car, and set off.
The Sun was setting fast, and I knew it would take me over an hour to get there, but I still went anyway.
I'd never been there before, and had no real idea as to where I would shoot from once I got there, so I completely winged it from start to finish :mrgreen
I was still about 5 minutes away from the lighthouse, and I could see the Sun had already set beyond the horizon, but I'd come this far, so I wasn't turning back now.
Anyhoo...here are just a few of the shots I managed to get from the evening.

1. This was similar to the image I had seen on the internet, so it was naturally my first angle to shoot from. It was actually from the edge of the Golf course itself. The Sun had set minutes earlier, right in between the lighthouse and Ailsa Craig, the island you can see in the distance.

2. The rest of the images were taken from a different angle, down on the shore.

I could have stayed there all night, but it was actually PITCH black, and it was really tricky to find my way back to the car again.
It was a total rush job. No prep, no research, no sandwiches
Now that I've been there, the next time I go I will be fully prepared, and I know exactly where I want to shoot my next set from.
I can't wait to go back.

Thanks Azz. I'm pleased with the shots I got considering the circumstances. I had also hoped to get some nice long exposures of the sea crashing against the rocks, but the tide was going out, and the water was very very still. I'll time it better next time though

Cheers Sam. The first decent day I get, and I'll be back there...this time with a flask, 'cause it was freezing I'm glad you like number 3, thank you. Number 4 is actually my favourite of this bunch.

Thanks Z. It is a gorgeous place, and on a night like that, it was just magical.

Thanks Dawn. If you quickly scroll down the images, you can see a clear difference as the Sun sets, changing the light from gold to blue.
I only wish I had been there 20 mins earlier, because the view of the Sun sitting halfway over the horizon, was one of the most spectacular I'd ever seen.
Next time

Re: Turnberry Lighthouse

Those are all very good shots Ian and difficult for me to pick a favourite, I like them all
Having gone through them all repeatedly,I think 1,4, 7 and 9 are the best with 1 and 9 tying for top place

I've past that lighthouse many times but never found a suitable place to stop and image it. I know there is a gate at the entrance to the lighthouse which crosses the golfcourse
but I always thought it was private use only, until someone told me recently that it can be used by the public as long as there is no major golf tournament playing.

It looks like you stopped somewhere a good bit before the road to the lighthouse. Did you have to walk much?
