I've been shopping-Sigma 10-20 WA

Just been to a nice camera shop and bought myself the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC wide angle lens.
I looked at several suppliers and makers. I would have liked the canon 10-22EF-S but it was over £200-00 dearer and finally settled on the Sigma, despite stories of off centre focussing and dodgy edges. Latest reports suggest these issues have been sorted and new stock is sound.
I paid £303-18 after VAT drop discount code applied.(Jessops) I had to ask for the discount code voucher though, but it saved another tenner. They are available over the counter, I checked first.

One word of warning. Our local supplier (I won't name and shame but I feel like I should) is advertising many items in their advert in current magazine issues but won't sell at those prices when you ring to order (not even close) and is also NOT passing on the VAT reduction.
Hence I drove a 58 mile round trip to Jessops in the snow.

I got home fairly late but managed to grab a few quick shots in the last light and I am pretty impressed.
I got a shot of our 20' lounge and it shows more than 50% of the room.
One thing I was amazed at was that I took all the shots handheld and some exposures were about 5 seconds and they are not half bad for sharpness considering.

Looking forward to getting out for a play in the snow tomorrow.

that's one of my favourite lenses - you wont be disappointed - great for landscapes.

I like it so much I'm buying the same lens in Nikon fit!

Re: I've been shopping-Sigma 10-20 WA

I like that lens, seen some good shots with it but in the end I opted for the Sigma 12-24mm EX which is better corrected and possibly more use to me. The latter can be used full frame and most of what I am buying now has that in mind although don't have enough 'spare' cash to prioritise a D700. I've noticed quite a lot of photos in magazines etc. use that lens which speaks for itself.

Can't think you would get away with 5 seconds handheld! Obviously a telephoto lens magnifies any movement but if you look at the images on screen i think they will be blurred enough...unless you are a marathon runner with slow breathing and heartrate!

Re: I've been shopping-Sigma 10-20 WA

Believe me, they are pretty sharp and it is amazing as I am the world worst for shake.

Mind you it was minus 5 c so I could have been frozen stiff.

Ian - don't forget to budget for a 77mm circular polarizing filter - it will make all of the difference to your outdoor shots.

Re: I've been shopping-Sigma 10-20 WA

Jack,
77mm polarizing lens is on the shopping list. Only ones in stock were a shade off £70-00.
Noticed the 7day shop has them in for considerably less. But are they any cop, all their filters seem ridiculously cheap compared to other places.???

For those who are thinking of getting one of these lenses, just do it.
Got some really satisfying shots at sunrise over the ice crusted snow fields.

If Mr. BT comes up trumps with my Broadband connection on Tuesday I will post them on here for C&C.
