Compact camera's

Hey everyone, i'm hoping someone will be able to help me out with my OH's Xmas present!!

He wants a new camera but only a compact camera as he's not big into photography. His only criteria that he has specified is that he wants something with "shock resistance" (his words, not mine!!) for when he goes skiing as he feels his last one broke as a result of skiing or maybe the amount of times he fell over?!?

I wasn't even sure if you could buy a compact camera with built in shock resistance, i know you can get cases that minimise damage through impact etc but built in shock resistance?

I don't really want to spend a fortune on one (£150 tops) as he is probably only going to use it once a year when he goes skiing with work and the rest of the time it'll probably reside alongside my D5000 in my camera bag

Can anyone suggest anything that would be suitable for this use that wouldn't break my budget? Or am i better off just picking a decent camera and buying a case to protect it?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Compact camera's

No camera won't suffer to some extent if its dropped or heavily shaken so there is no point in looking for one.
The answer is not to take a camera when skiing, if he can't take reasonable care of a camera then get him something else instead. He should realise a camera is still a delicate electronic piece of equipment and treat it as such.

Re: Compact camera's

Olympus and Panasonic do a number of 'tough' and waterproof compact cameras. Other than that just buy something around £100 with robust alloy body and keep it in a good padded case and wear it somewhere unlikely to take the full force of a fall..

Yeah, wasn't there an ad a while back for a 'tough' camera? Think it was Sony or Olympus :-/

Re: Compact camera's

I might suggest one thing to consider is a hard case for a pocket camera. Here's the link: http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/441662962.htm. I use this exact case to protect my Nikon S550 pocket camera.

Check out the metal IXUS range.

We've had a few 'bounce' with no subsequent problems - built like tanks.

To me that doesn't read Quote " he does look after his stuff " Unquote

Maybe looking after ones "stuff" has a completely different meaning to what I understand as taking care of camera equipment.
