Which macro lens for Nikon D90?

I am thinking of adding a macro lens for my Nikon D90 to my kit. I prefer to stick with Nikon lenses if possible but not inflexible on that. What would be the recommendations. Nothing a specialised as the one mentioned by Phil.

Re: Which macro lens for Nikon D90?

I would personally go for a longer lens, like the 90mm otherwise you have to get quite close to the bugs and sometimes that can cause problems re lighting too. (Also, you might get stung depending on the bug LOL).

Tamron do a nice one, but the Nikons are rather special!

Re: Which macro lens for Nikon D90?

The Tamron 90mm is a great Macro lens, and is the one I will probably buy. The Nikon 105mm is the other one I covet, but it's double the price. I know I will only use it for flowers, and occassionally, not interested in bugs and creepy crawlies. So for me to buy the Nikon one, would be silly.

But if you are going to be using it a lot, the 105 mm is a great lens.

Samnooshka has the Tamron 90mm, and loves it. I think Bob, has the Nikon 60mm Macro.

Re: Which macro lens for Nikon D90?

Thanks Azz, the nikon 105mm looks good but very expensive, I will have a look at the Tamron. I also notice the 'Focus on Imaging' exhibition is on at the NEC in March. This is just down the road from me and may be the ideal opportunity to have a good look at whats on offer.

Thanks Suzette, what you say make good sense as I too don't really know how much use it will get.

Re: Which macro lens for Nikon D90?

Yeah I'd try and get down there - just to have a look around!

I would also check out pbase.com to look at images taken with any lenses you shortlist - should give you a good idea of the type of image each takes.

Also good post by Moonstone above yours (you posted at roughly the same time so I guess you missed it). Edit: scrap that - just noticed you noticed it lol.

You're welcome I loved my old Macro lens I had (Olympus), but I only used it on flowers, and mostly in the Summer. So, it does depend how much you are going to use it, both produce great images though

Hope you find one to suit you xx

Re: Which macro lens for Nikon D90?

I have the Tamron 90mm macro lens and it is a really good lens. It came second to the Nikon 105mm macro out of about 7/8 done in a camera mag some time ago.

Jeff

As your in the Midlands if your around the Walsall area you can come and try mine out on your camera if you bring your camera. Also have a go with my other lenses while your at it for future reference.
