Flash Guns... help!

OK... I've been meaning to buy a flash for ages - and just never got around to it! Well... next weekend I've been asked to do something I really need a flash for, which hasn't left me with much time (to find the right one or accumulate funds - typical of me!). I want the SB900 - always have done - but it sells for €500 here! Which is shocking to say the least, and it's practically against my religion to pay that much for something that costs so much less elsewhere! Especially when I'm coming to UK in November. Soo... I'm thinking of a cheapo one to tide me over (though I don't really want to do that ) but I was thinking perhaps if there's a smaller, cheaper flash that's sufficiently different to the SB900 to make it worth having both...? Ooor, I guess I could sell the cheaper one on when I buy the SB900...

So - long story short, can anyone give me a lowdown on good cheap/third party flashes that I can have a look for?

Jessops do their own 'cheap' flash guns don't they?

Don't go for second best the SB900 is amazing and very very user friendly. Have a look on that well known internet site you should find them costing less on there. You should find them at around £300/£320and NO you can't have mine

Hi I bought a jessops own make flash and it was crap, read the reviews on AFD300 and the AFD360. I wish I had spent the extra on a Canon flash.
I ended up with the Canon 430EX11 and what a differance Bags more power and control. So i would urge you if you can strech to a Nikon flash it will save you money in the long run, you wont want to replace it after a week.( unlike the jessops one )

I laugh because I gave the equipment lady my SB900 to sell just weeks ago. It was so new & unused it had never been outside my apartment. You could have had it at a bargain price.

Have a look at Vivitar ,and Metz are really good If I didn't have mine, and was on a budget, I'd look at Metz. If I was on a very tight budget, then Vivitar.

Thanks all - well - firstly we don't have Jessops here. I looked on Warehouse Express but they wanted £35 postage... which I was a bit floored by! In the end I looked on Pixmania - which I know has terrible reviews, but they were very reasonable in price (cheaper than WE) - so I thought I'd give them a shot anyway. Despite their reviews, mum has bought from them in the past with no trouble...

So I just bought an SB900 delivered at the bargain price of €380 That's really very good, so I'm not grumbling... yet! We'll see if it gets here in one piece first!

You won't regret it. The controls on it are so so easy, even scrolling thru the features via the dial is a pleasure. You will be flashing in next to no time.
